My hometown

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, located in the middle part of the area called Dalmatia, in southern Croatia. It has about 200.000 inhabitants and it is a very important Mediterranean city wich is situated on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. The ridges Kozjak and Mosor separate it from the hinterland.

Split has a Mediterranean climate wich is different from the climate in other parts of Croatia. Summers are hot and dry and winters are warm and wet. It is one of the sunniest places in Europe. There are many beautiful beaches, so many people enjoy the clear blue sea, wich has a temperature of about 25 C in the summer. It has many nice places for swimming, diving, fishing and another water sports.

Split is a very important transport center and it is the third busiest port in the Mediterranean. There are hospitals, schools, university, art galleries, theatres, museums and churches. It is the old historic city and its historic center "Palace of Diocletian" is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. There are many different industries: shipbuilding, chemical, textile, food ( fishing, olive, wine production) and mostly tourism.

The 7th of May is the day of Saint Dujam who is the saint patron of the city. On that day there is a religious celebration and many people from different cities come there. The religious celebration start in the morning and it finishs in the afternoon. After that concerts begin and dancing on the squares, to draw out bingo and in the evening is a show of fireworks. During summer, there is a very popular Split Music Festival, the Split Summer theater festival, the Festival of flowers and the Festival of food.

The people of Split are friendly. Every year, a lot of people come from all world and in the summer, the city is crowded with tourists.
