The city of Melbourne


Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria, located in the south-eastern part of Australia. It has about 3.345.000 inhabitants and it is a multicultural city where many Chineese, Vietnamese, Greeks and Italians live. The main language is English but Vietnamese and Chinese language is first in some suburbs, so English is the second language for many residents.
The average temperature is 21-31 C in the Summer and the winter temperature is 2-3 C. Winters are often very could but the snow is very uncommon. The temperature is variable and it changes quickly.
On the coast is a large port, so many ships visit the city each day. Melbourne has the large wide Yarra River wich runs through the city centre. Along the side of the River are many cafes. There are many clubs, bars and many people play live music. It has many cafes and food from around world.
Melbourne has different types of industries: car manufacture, clothing manufacture, tourism. Lately, the clothing industry is decreasing as imports from China increase. Tourism is a very important type of industry. There are: art galleries, museums, ZOO, wich has most of Australia`s famous animals and birds. In the city centre is a very large new Crown Casino. There is a famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. Melbourne has clean beaches but the water is cooler than Sydney`s. It has a large public transport system, wich is very cheap - trains, buses and electric trams in the city centre.
Melbourne is the music and the arts centre of Australia.

The city of Perth



Perth is the capital city of Western Australia. It is located in the south-west corner of Australia. It has 1.340.000 inhabitants. People are very friendly and they love outdoors, sun and water.

It is one of the sunniest cities in the world, with an average of 8 hours sunshine per day. Summers are very hot and warm and the average temperature is 29C in daytime and 17 C at night. The winter is cool and wet and the average temperature is 18 C in daytime and 9 C at night.

Most of the city is flat. It has many kilometers of cycle track, so many people cycle around the city at the weekends. Perth has many clean, beautiful beaches and it is a nice place for excellent swimming, surfing, boating and fishing.

There are 4 universities in the city and the student population is large. It has several museums and art galleries. Perth has different types of industries: tourism, grape growing and mining.

It is cultural centre of Western Australia.

My hometown

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, located in the middle part of the area called Dalmatia, in southern Croatia. It has about 200.000 inhabitants and it is a very important Mediterranean city wich is situated on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. The ridges Kozjak and Mosor separate it from the hinterland.

Split has a Mediterranean climate wich is different from the climate in other parts of Croatia. Summers are hot and dry and winters are warm and wet. It is one of the sunniest places in Europe. There are many beautiful beaches, so many people enjoy the clear blue sea, wich has a temperature of about 25 C in the summer. It has many nice places for swimming, diving, fishing and another water sports.

Split is a very important transport center and it is the third busiest port in the Mediterranean. There are hospitals, schools, university, art galleries, theatres, museums and churches. It is the old historic city and its historic center "Palace of Diocletian" is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. There are many different industries: shipbuilding, chemical, textile, food ( fishing, olive, wine production) and mostly tourism.

The 7th of May is the day of Saint Dujam who is the saint patron of the city. On that day there is a religious celebration and many people from different cities come there. The religious celebration start in the morning and it finishs in the afternoon. After that concerts begin and dancing on the squares, to draw out bingo and in the evening is a show of fireworks. During summer, there is a very popular Split Music Festival, the Split Summer theater festival, the Festival of flowers and the Festival of food.

The people of Split are friendly. Every year, a lot of people come from all world and in the summer, the city is crowded with tourists.

Necktie


The necktie is an item of clothing wich is worn around the collar of a shirt. It is used by men and sometimes it is used by women.
Croatia has its place in the history of the necktie, becouse it was worn by Croatian soldiers in the century 16. Around the year 1630 some soldiers and knights went to Paris to give their support to King Louis and there were a lot of Croatian soldiers wich had tradicional outfits with scarves wich were tied around their neck. This "Croatian style" enamoured the French, who were delighted by the new article of clothing becouse it was uniknown in Europe. Shortly, it became high fashion in France and later in all Europe.
The scarves were made of various materials. For common soldiers they were coarse material and silk and cotton for officers. Later, the scarves got french name "cravate" and they have become a fashion wich simbolized the culture and elegance of clothing.
The necktie are used for nice and formal clothing wich is worn by a lot of people in the world.
